Cam-araderie: Blewitt selected to NH Shrine Team

Rosters for the upcoming 59th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl were released today and Cam Blewitt was chosen to represent Stevens High School at this year’s installment being played at Dartmouth College on August 4. Blewitt, a three-time 1st Team All-State Football Player and starter since his freshman year, is ecstatic about being selected to the New Hampshire team.  “To be selected is a huge honor. It’s something I’ve dreamed about for years,” Cam said via email. “To think that the coaches think I am good enough to compete with the best players in the state is crazy!”

Blewitt finished his high school career with 2,560 yards rushing on 424 carries and 29 rushing touchdowns (40 overall), but he is slated to play cornerback for Head Coach Mike Beliveau’s defensive unit. “I don’t have a ton of experience at corner, but I have played there some in my 4 years at Stevens, reflected Blewitt. “I think I am quick enough to stay with most of the receivers that will line up against me, and if not, I hopefully will be big enough to jam them and not let them get to full speed by the time the QB has to throw the ball.”  Blewitt finished his four years with 217 tackles and 8 interceptions.

Stevens Head Coach Paul Silva couldn’t be happier for his student-athlete. “Cam is an outstanding young man and one of the best football players that I have had the pleasure of coaching. He is just so deserving of this honor with all that he accomplished this season,” Silva said via email.

One of the main points to Cam’s selection besides his play on the field was his leadership and competitive abilities. Blewitt has been a captain since his sophomore year and led by example. “Despite opponents game planning to stop him, every game (2011), he was still able to rush for 1,155 yards on 184 carries and scored 15 touchdowns, while averaging 6.3 yards per carry,” said Silva. “Those are truly amazing numbers, particularly in the division we play in. He leads by example with a tireless work ethic and a drive to do whatever it takes to succeed in each game.”

Blewitt is going into camp with every intention of leaving an impression. “I just hope I can do whatever I can to help our team be successful. Whether it's playing every down at corner, returning kicks, which I would really enjoy doing, or just getting in for 10 plays the whole game, I just want to make a positive impact on the game for New Hampshire,” said Blewitt.

Coach Silva has no worries about Cam’s abilities to slide over from safety to the corner position. “Cam is one of the most intelligent players we have ever put on the field. He studies film before every game and has a unique ability to recognize tendencies and formations during the game to put us in a better position to make plays. His versatility is unmatched by any in the division. He can play virtually any position, on either side of the ball, and play it well,” Silva said.

While being selected to the Shrine Game is a prestigious honor, the chances of being selected are difficult. Blewitt made sure that he was noticed in the Division V circles as several coaches pegged Cam is the division’s best player:

"...we were all asked to rank our divisions players You should know that picking #1 was easy, it was Blewitt. He did it all for Stevens and was the one everyone had to game plan around."

"...let him know how highly regarded he is among the coaches for his ability, relentless play and work-ethic. I think we all wish we had a player like him."

"I felt hands down that Cam was the class of the Division."

"The thing I love about Cam the most is that he is even better in person than he is on the field. I look forward to watching him play at Dartmouth in August."

His head coach feels the same way. “I think that sums up just how much respect he earned throughout the Division. I know he has mine and I am just thrilled for him to get this opportunity to represent Stevens High School and the Claremont community in such a prestigious event,” said Silva.

While Cam plans to play collegiate baseball at either Franklin Pierce or Southern New Hampshire University next year, he is looking forward to that one final game on the gridiron and the experience of participating in the activities. “Having one last chance to put on the pads and playing a game of football representing the state of New Hampshire and Stevens High School will be an awesome feeling,” said Blewitt.

Congratulations, Cam!

2012 Schedule Update

2012 Schedule in the Works

With the recent announcement that Fall Mountain was dropping its Varsity Football Program for the next schedule cycle, Stevens and its opponents now are dealing with an open week in their schedules. The Wildcats were faced with a numbers problem, a issue the Cardinals are very familiar with. Faced with dwindling participants and a loss of competitive balance, then Stevens Athletic Director Matt Laramie made the unpopular decision of suspending varsity football beginning in the 2002 fall season. The Cardinals were relegated to independent and junior varsity schedules before returning to varsity action in 2004.

While there was a draft schedule in place prior to Fall Mountain's announcement, it now will be reviewed and possibly modified at an upcoming Division V Football meeting at the beginning of February. Games scheduled with Fall Mountain will most likely create a bye week in the nine week schedule with only eight games being played. There will be discussion at that meeting on adding a ninth game to the campaign.

Once the schedule is officially released in mid-February, we will post it here.

Small Potatoes: Who Killed the CVL?

Small Potatoes: Who Killed the CVL?

A couple of years ago, ESPN ran a 30 for 30 Film covering the demise of the once popular United States Football League that operated from 1983-1987 during the spring and summer seasons thus serving as an alternative to the NFL. While there are many theories as to why this league did not survive, the former Connecticut Valley League also enjoyed its heyday during the same period. Focused on Connecticut River Valley schools, the CVL format enjoyed large crowds on Saturday afternoons from Hartford, VT to Fall Mountain Regional. The competition between the area schools was also electric as it fostered rivalries with your next door neighbor. Stevens won its "last football championship" in 1985 winning the CVL Championship. The Granite State offered Hanover, Lebanon, Stevens, Newport, and Fall Mountain into the mix while Vermont enjoyed Hartford, Woodstock, Windsor, Springfield, and Bellows Falls representing the sister state. Just recently, Stevens began playing several of these schools in other sports-football is not a possibility given the requirements by each state's governing body to compete for a state championship.

So let's do something a bit different to allow for the revival of the league. There are two different scenarios which could play out. The first would be a full day of area football which would allow the area schools the opportunity to "showcase" the talent in one setting in the preseason. Hosted at Barnes Park, we would host  the nine other schools that once played in the league and allow for interstate scrimmages. On a Saturday in August, it would be VT vs. NH in one half of football or 1.5 hours, whichever lasted longer. Here's a tentative game schedule:

Game 1: Hartford vs. Hanover 12p
Game 2: Woodstock vs. Lebanon 1:45p
Game 3: Springfield vs. Fall Mountain 3:30p
Game 4: Bellows Falls vs. Newport 5:15p
Game 5: Windsor vs. Stevens 7p

Part of the day's admissions would serve as a fundraiser for an area non-profit. It would be an unbelievable day of football!

The second version is a Thanksgiving Day All-Star Game pitting Vermont against New Hampshire. With 5 schools for each state, coaches from each school would select 6 players from their respective schools to participate. With rosters of 30 players each, players would only play either offense or defense, coaches would be selected each year, and this game could be hosted in Hanover each year because of the field turf. Practices would be conducted prior to the game. This event would draw over 1,000 fans and could also serve as a fundraiser for the valley.

Yes, there are liability and logistic issues with both which make something like this extremely difficult to pull off, but either event would give the area fans a bit of nostalgia, serve as a profitable fundraiser, and allow one venue for the valley's student-athletes to showcase their talents to the population.

And Trump will not destroy this event.

2012 Shrine Game Selections-Part 1

Lights, Cam-era, Action: 3 Reasons Blewitt Should Be Selected

With the 59th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl slated to be played on August 4 at Dartmouth College, selections for the New Hampshire roster will be announced in February. Players are normally notified in late January of their selection at which time they can accept or decline due to other commitments. Under team selection guidelines, Head Coach Mike Beliveau (Souhegan) must select four student-athletes from Division V to make a full roster of 36 players from the six divisions making the possibility of selection extremely difficult based on the numbers. So why should Cam Blewitt represent Stevens High School this August? Here are three reasons:

1.  The Numbers- In 2011, Cam rushed for 1,155 yards on 184 carries with 15 touchdowns. He caught 5 passes for 77 yards with one score, returned 18 kickoffs for 458 yards and one touchdown, and threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns. For his high school career, Blewitt rushed for 2,560 yards with 29 touchdowns and has scored 40 touchdowns in his four years. The last Stevens running back to be selected was John Ackerman in 2006 when during his senior season, he played in 11 games, rushed for 1,221 yards and 13 touchdowns.

2. Versatility- Blewitt has played running back, quarterback, linebacker, safety, cornerback, and punter during his high school career. He also has been named as a First Team All-Stater on offense for three campaigns. He has scored in almost every conceivable way.  This video sums up Cam's abilities. At 6'2" and 200 lbs, Blewitt could play tight end as well if needed.  He also finished with 217 tackles during his four years.

3. Driven- Cam loves the competition. With this season's offense morphing to a heavy dose of the run, Blewitt shouldered the load. Teams knew exactly what they would be seeing and were unable to stop him. He recorded five games with at least 100 yards rushing, two of which were for over 200. Cam also was selected as the team's MVP for two seasons as well.

Stevens has been represented in 28 of the 58 games played to support the Shriner's Hospitals. The honor of playing in this game speaks for itself so hopefully in 2012, we will all be sitting in the bleachers at Memorial Field, wearing our Blewitt 42 t-shirts, enjoying the atmosphere, and celebrating Cam's accomplishments and selection. He is deserving.

2012 NH East-West High School All-Star Football Game

Inaugural Game Rosters Released-No Stevens Representatives

The coaching staffs for the 2012 NH East-West High School All-Star Football Game to benefit CHaD have announced the rosters for the June 23rd game at the University of New Hampshire, and the Cardinals will not be represented in this year's contest.

The West Team is coached by Milford's Keith Jones and only selected Parker Hansen (Kearsarge) as the lone required representative from Division V. Other Division V programs able to send players were Fall Mountain, Bow, and Bishop Brady as well as Stevens and Kearsarge.

There still is another opportunity for the Cardinals to send a player to one more high school football game as rosters for the Maple Sugar Shrine Bowl will be announced next month. Stevens has the possibility of being represented by Cam Blewitt as he finished his high school experience with 2,560 yards rushing on 424 carries with 29 touchdowns and scored 40 touchdowns total in his four years. New Hampshire's squad is coached by Souhegan's Mike Beliveau and Division V needs four representatives to participate.

2012 Predictions
1/1/2012 12:24:30 PM
Happy New Year!

First of all, Happy New Year to all the followers on this site. 2011 brought some great improvements as the Photos section of the site has improved drastically as Wayne McElreavy has shared his photo galleries with everyone. Many outside media outlets have used this for information prior to covering the Cardinals. This site has also been linked on some state high school football following sites. While I was unable to carry video this past year, I hope to increase the media offerings in 2012. So my New Year's Resolution for this site is to offer video as well as a weekly audio podcast beginning in August so hold me to it. I also hope to create a media guide to send to all the schools we play. So for fun, I was going to do 2012 predictions for the team, but have decided to let them make their own predictions starting in August. We shall find out then.

Happy New Year!
Best of 2011-Fourth Down
12/31/2011 9:33:28 AM
Best of 2011-Cardinal Pride

Closing out the year with the fourth installment of the Best of 2011 Series, we shall finish with the team's awards. Highlight, lowlight, and individual performance are only a few of the categories so feel free to weigh in on the past calendar year's happenings.

Highlight of the year-Joe Tarr's catch and run against Somersworth
Senior Joe Tarr catches a Billy Brooks' pass over the middle, bobbles the ball on his helmet, catches, rumbles 54 yards for the touchdown, while breaking numerous tackles for his only score of the season.  Video of the catch

Lowlight of the year-Logan Batchelder breaks leg against Kearsarge
Trailing 31-28 in the fourth, Batchelder takes off running on a 22-yard gain only to leave the field on a stretcher.

Best coaching move-CJ Gosselin moves to linebacker
After the first two games of the season, Gosselin was invisible defensively as teams ran away from him. A move to linebacker allowed CJ's aggressiveness to be utilized finishing with 85 tackles and First-Team All-State Honors. Runner-up:

Best individual offensive performance-Cam Blewitt against Bishop Brady
Hard to choose which one of the games was Cam's best but given the fact that he rushed for 221 yards on 19 carries and four touchdowns, the scoring makes this one the winner.

Best team offensive performance-Against Sanborn
The team recorded 324 yards on the ground and 33 yards in the air (357 yards) and put up the third highest point total of the season.

Best individual defensive performance-CJ Gosselin against Sanborn
Gosselin finished the game with 16 total tackles and more importantly, the game's final one, sacking QB Ryan Morris inside the 10-yard line to secure the victory as time expired.

Best team defensive performance-Against Fall Mountain
The team pitched a shutout against the Wildcats in a wild game finishing with 65 total tackles, the second highest of the year.

Unsung Hero 2008-2011-Aaron Daignault
I have wondered recently how much money Aaron has raised for all the teams and leagues of which has has been a participant. Big D has raised thousands for the football program over the years and while he didn't really see the field until this season, that did not stop him from contributing in other ways.

Tomorrow will be 2012 Predictions.

Best photo-Fumble recovery against Campbell
Wayne McElreavy snapped this on CJ Gosselin's fumble recovery on their own 36-yard line in the third quarter. This was the first of three drives that resulted in consecutive fumbles. Runner-up: Extra point attempt in Windham

Best Road Trip- Barnes Park, Claremont
You have to call it a road trip because they get on the bus, but this one mile drive is the easiest of the season. Runner-up: Kearsarge

Worst road trip- St. Thomas Aquinas, Dover
Two plus hours on the bus make this trip unenjoyable. Add in the fact that not one, but both buses got lost. If you take your own vehicle, a quick stop at Johnson's for fried whole clams makes it worthwhile. Runner-up: Windham

Best weather conditions-Campbell (September 17)
It was a beautiful autumn day. Sunshine with just a bit of crispness in the air. Runner-up: Kearsarge

Worst weather conditions-Somersworth (September 30)
Downpours. Lightning. Thunder. Heavier Downpours. More Lightning! Crazy.  Runner-up: Fall Mountain

Most fan-friendly-Campbell
Up on the action as the field was roped off, a small hill on the visitor's sideline to stand on, and I don't believe they charged admission (or at least I didn't pay). Runner-up: ?

Best bathrooms/concessions-Windham
Brand new facility. That in itself gives it this accolade. Plus two windows for service at the concession. Runner-up: Kearsarge

Best on-field medical staff other than Golden Cross-Kearsarge
No particular reason :).

Best opposing player- Ryan Monette, St. Thomas Aquinas
Speedy, low center of gravity, good hands, quick moves, and an all-around threat. Glad we don't play him next year. Runner-up: Scott Munroe, STA

Tomorrow will be Cardinal specific, breaking down top plays, performances, coaching moves, and other twisted material.
